A brief explanation of autism

Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life. This is a result of a neurological disorder that affects the normal functioning of the brain, affecting development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. E 'characterized by reduced social interaction, problems with activities limited verbal and nonverbal communication, and unusual, repetitive, or severely, or interest. Autism is a spectrum disorder, "whichaffects individuals differently and to varying degrees.

Autism is one of five disorders that falls under the pervasive developmental disorders (PDD). The other four are Asperger's disorder, PDD-NOS, Rett's disorder and CDD. Autism is the most common PDD. It knows no boundaries of race, ethnic or social. It is four times more common in boys than girls. It is assumed to grow at a rate of 10 to 17% for YER United States, according to statistics of the SU Department of Education. There are no medical tests for diagnosing autism. There is no cure for autism.

Children with autism have higher than normal risk for certain co-existing conditions:

Cornelia DeLange syndrome - a congenital, present from birth. Tourette's Syndrome - a neurobiological disorder characterized by tics - involuntary, rapid, sudden movements and / or vocal outbursts that occur repeatedly. Appears in early childhood or adolescence before the age of 18 years. The fragile X syndrome - the mostmost common cause of inherited mental retardation. Williams syndrome - a rare genetic disease that causes health problems and development. Down syndrome - the most commonly occurring chromosomal condition. Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) - a hereditary disease that causes tumors to form in many organs, especially in the brain, eyes, heart, kidneys, skin and lungs. Landau-Kleffner syndrome - a childhood disease, sudden or gradual loss of ability to understand and use spoken language.congenital rubella syndrome - when a mother passes the virus rubella (measles) to their developing fetus, making the child born deaf, blind, heart problems, developmental delays and other medical conditions. Untreated Phenylkentonuria (PKU) - the absence or deficiency of an enzyme responsible for processing the phyenylalanine essential amino acids. This is evident during the first days of life with appropriate blood tests. Kluver-Bucy syndrome -conduct a rare defect that is associated with damage to the anterior temporal lobe of the brain. Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) - a complex non-hereditary congenital anomaly caused by a deviation on chromosome 15. Lesch-Nyhan Disease (LND) - is the most commonly inherited but can also occur as a spontaneous genetic mutation. This is a rare X-linked recessive disease with an almost total absence of activity of the enzyme hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferase (HPRT).You do not have access to more information about the above conditions on their websites. Type in the condition or disease as a Google search should lead to the website (most end up in Org).

Many therapists believe that the use of a program highly structured and intensive skill-oriented to help children develop the use of language and social skills is the best way to work with autistic children. Others feel differently. There are several programs available for parents in search of anotherapproach to work with their autistic child. Some of these programs are supported by the scientific community. Parents should be careful when you try a different approach.

For many children, autism improve with treatment and age. Some children will grow up to be a normal or nearly normal life. There are some wonderful books written by people with autism on their lives. They give hope to those parents raising a child with autism.

Depending on whose report you read,Autism affects 3-6 children from each of our 1000, according to the International Centre for Research and Education. O 1 in every 150 American children, according to a report in February 2007 by the Center for Disease Control. This is a big difference. Why are there so many American children with autism?
