George Shearing - The Amazing English Blind Pianist

George Shearing was born blind on August 13, 1919, but his life has been fast-paced and full of accomplishments. Born in London, Shearing was the youngest of nine children and even though blind from birth, went on to create one of the most recognized sounds in jazz.

By the age of three, Shearing learned to play the piano. Then, Linden Lodge School for the Blind was his home away from home for four years. While in school, Shearing also learned to play the accordion. He even performed at a local pub for the equivalent of almost 5 dollars per week.

Shortly after, Shearing joined a band of blind musicians. In 1937, at the age of 18, George Shearing began recording music with Leonard Feather. After three years of recording with Feather, Harry Parry's band took in Shearing. During this time, Shearing was also honored as the winner of seven Melody Maker polls.

Although he moved to the United States in 1947, he became a United States citizen in 1956. During those nine years, George Shearing began playing a new style of music that incorporated swing, bop, and modern classic.

1949 marked the year that Shearing founded the first George Shearing Quintet. The quintet included Marjorie Hyams, Chuck Wayne, John Levy, and Denzil Best. The first single from the quintet was September in the Rain, and it sold over 900,000 copies. In 1969, the quintet stopped recording with Capitol; however, Sheaving solved the problem by starting Sheba, his own recording label.

From 1970 to 1978, the quintet disassembled. During these eight years, The Reunion and With George Shearing were released. Shearing recorded and released these albums in collaboration with well-known bassist Andy Simpkins, drummer Rusty Jones, and musician Stephane Grappelli. Over the years, other collaborations included music with Montgomery Brothers, Marian McPartland, Brian Q. Torff, Jim Hall, Hank Jones, Kenny Davern, Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee, Ernestine Anderson, Dakota Staton, Carmen McRae, and Nancy Wilson. Concord Records signed George Shearing in 1979. Under Concord Records, he won Grammy awards in 1982 and 1983.

From the 1980's through the 1990's, George Shearing performed at numerous festivals, was on numerous radio shows, and made many recordings. Collaboration with Neil Swainson occurred in the 1990's through the early 21st century. The Rare Delight of You, an album with Shearing and The John Pizzarelli Trio, was released in 2002. It received great reviews.

Along the way, a now-popular piano technique was named after Shearing. It is called Shearing Voicing. This technique uses a block chord with the melody on top in the right hand while the left hand repeats the melody in a lower octave and makes it stand out over the right hand. It is a difficult style to perfect, particularly when playing solo. In his quintet Shearing has the vibes player playing the melody also, creating what some have described as a "shimmering overtone" effect.

Jack Kerouac's novel On the Road describes a lovely Shearing performance. In all of his years of musical service, Shearing recorded and released close to 100 albums and has received many notable awards. Westminster College in Utah gave him an honorary Doctor of Music degree in 1975. Shearing also earned the Horatio Alger Award for Distinguished Americans in 1978. In 1993, the Ivor Novello Award for Lifetime Achievement was given to him. Shearing received another honorary degree from Hamilton College in New York. It was also a Doctor of Music honorary degree. He received the first American Music Award by the National Arts Club of New York in 1998. Recently, the BBC Jazz Awards' Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Shearing in 2003. George Shearing became Sir George Shearing in 2007 when he was knighted for his services in music.

Now, Sir George and his wife travel from their New York apartment to Berkshires frequently. Shearing is semi-retired.

You'll probably find that you are easily offended, you blame others for what's not right with your life, you complain a lot, fly off the handle and then regret it.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I"M BEING PROACTIVE?

You'll tend to say things like:

"Let's find a way to........"

"I choose to"

"I can do it."

"There has to be a way to do this."

"I'm not going to let.................. ruin my day."

You'll also tend to think before you act, take responsibility for your choices, bounce back quickly after a set back, focus on the things that you can change - not the ones that you can't.

CAN I CHANGE HOW I REACT TO THINGS?

If you have developed a habit of being reactive you can change it. It's like any habit, it may take a while to change, but if you want to you can. The first thing is to be AWARE of when you are being reactive. Take time - press the pause button - before you react. Decide which is the most empowering - is it to focus all your energy on things that are out of your control, or to focus on what you can control.

There are many things that you can't control - your environment, other people's reactions, the weather - if you focus on them, you'll feel like a victim.

If you focus on the one thing that you can change - yourself, you'll feel much more in control of your life, and more able to cope with the knocks that life throws at you.

ACTION STEP

Ask yourself - "What do I spend a lot of my time worrying about that I have no control over?"

How can I change my reaction to that, so that I feel more in control.

There are four kinds of blindness spoken of in the Bible. One is the physical blindness as in the case of the blind man whom Jesus healed and the disciples asked whether the man was born blind because of sin of the blind man or because of the sin of his parents. The second type of blindness is described in Deuteronomy 16:19 which says, "Thy shall take no gift as a gift blindeth the wise." The idea is a warning against accepting gifts which will influence our minds to overlook faults of the giver. It deters correct judgment.

In mental blindness Second Corinthians 3:14, St. Paul says, "God of this world blinded their minds." and again in verse 4:4 "He that hateth his brother is in darkness and darkness has blinded his eyes." This indicates that hatred prevents us from seeing the good qualities of a person.

Jesus spoke of the Pharisees who complained that disciples ate bread without washing their hands and Jesus said about them, "Let them alone that they may be blind leaders and if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall in the ditch." Betting Tips

Betting is key to winning in Texas Holdem and deciphering the betting structure can be a first time player's biggest challenge. Terms like dealer button, big blind, small blind and straddle are enough to confuse even experienced poker players of other poker variants. The good news is that with little more explanation and some practice, you too can master Texas Holdem betting.

In a house standard game, the dealer usually calls the game, shuffles the cards and deals. The two immediate players to his left are responsible for the blinds and the player to the left of the big blind is then responsible for starting the action. This situation the dealer is last to act giving him a distinct advantage. In house games every player takes turn dealing; therefore, the dealer advantage is passed equally to all the players.

In a structured Texas Holdem game at casinos or card rooms the dealer is provided. Using the same rules of a normal house game, this would give the player to the right of the dealer the advantage of acting last in every round. This small button, or chip, is passed around the table in the usual fashion. Even though the dealer is provided, the dealer button signifies that player to be in the dealer position for that hand and acts last. The casino dealer will start dealing the hand to the left of the dealer button. Once the hand is over, the dealer button is passed to the next player to the left.

Seeding the pot with cash for each hand is done through blinds (small and big blinds). Blinds are forced bets and are assigned to the two players directly to the left of the player possessing the dealer button. As the dealer button moves around the table so does the responsibility of the blinds so all players equally seed the pot. You should also note that if you are playing in a casinos or card room they will take a "rake", a small percentage of each pot. The rake is to maintain the game, facilities, and pay the dealers.

Normally there are two blinds called the "SMALL BLIND" and "BIG BLIND". The small blind is placed by the first player to the left of the dealer button and is half of the opening bet. For example in a $10/$20 Holdem game the small blind would be $5. The second player to the left of the dealer button is the big blind. The big blind is equal to the opening bet, so in the above example the big blind would be $10.

Once the blinds are placed and the cards are dealt, each player left of the big blind can call, raise or fold. Once the action goes around the table, the small blind can complete the bet by calling (matching the big blind or total bet if someone raises) or fold. Folding would forfeit their small blind. The big blind at the end of the first round of betting has one last chance to raise before the flop is dealt.

In some casinos, "STRADDLE" bets are permitted. A straddle is an additional blind that is not forced. The player to the left of the big blind may choose to place a straddle bet, which is typically double the amount of the big blind. A straddle bet is a raise before anyone has seen any cards. When someone elects to straddle, it makes that game twice as expensive to play. Basically, a straddle will turn a $10/$20 game into a $20/$40 for that hand. If you ever hear the dealer announce that a player has chose to straddle, you must match his initial raise to play the hand.

Baby Ferrets and the Special Care They Need

As with any pet it is an exciting event to help newborns along their path to maturity. Ferrets are no exception and provide lots of rewards when a few simple rules are followed. Baltray is One of Ireland's True Golfing Gems

You only have to look at the visitor's book in County Louth Golf Club, better known as Baltray, near Drogheda in County Louth, Ireland to realize that many from abroad, particularly America, have discovered this understated but hidden gem of a true links course. This is not a recent trend either, for as far back as the seventies the course acquired a reputation that put it firmly in the top Irish links courses. Long before the course attained fame by holding two Irish Opens, true purists of the links game have raved about the merits of this wonderful track. The course now features in the Golf Digest Top 100 world courses and if you are playing golf in Ireland be sure it is on your itinerary. Less than an hour north of Dublin, it is worthy of an epic journey as many who play it undertake.

The course has a long history starting from a meeting in October of 1892 which created the initial course. The idea was good but the design was poor and thus in 1938 the current championship links was designed Tom Simpson, a renowned architect of the period. The course is laid out in two loops covering some 190 acres on the northern banks of the River Boyne estuary. A further subtle upgrade by Tom MacKenzie in 2003 added yardage and brought back into play obstacles that newer equipment and balls had eliminated. The course is now just over 7,000 yards long.

There are no weak holes on this course. Every one of them deserves praise but even with that compliment, one must highlight a few outstanding challenges that rise to exceptional levels of quality. For this writer the 12th, a par 4 index 3, 410 yard hole is the favourite. Named the Crater, the hole is slightly left to right dog-leg and has a narrow landing area protected by two bunkers on the left and savage hilly rough on the left. Land in the latter and say goodbye to your ball. The second shot is blind through a narrow V shaped gap into a bowl-shaped or crater-like area surrounded by treacherous rough very close to the green. Accuracy is critical on both drive and approach shot because the price of failure in that department is the wrecking of a card. Come away from there with a par though and you will feel on top of the world.

The 16th is a 419 yard par-4, index 7, left to right dogleg that again puts a premium on accuracy. Try to steal yards by keeping it too right will leave you with a treacherous blind second shot across trees. The green is tucked away in a narrow corner surrounded by hazards. The only way to go is centre of the fairway or left of centre from the tee. The second shot must then be as good as the first to find the green. Again if you walk away from here with a par you have done well. It leaves you with a relatively straightforward par-3 17th and a birdie opportunity to finish on lovely par five if you have the advantage of the prevailing wind.

Baltray is an old-world golf course from the club house which accommodates overnight visitors to the history and achievement of the many great golfers that emanated from here. Tradition is important in Baltray and the past is respected and revered. A friendly knowing welcome will always meet the stranger who has taken the trouble to find this place because they know you are here not for the stroll but for the challenge.

July 1

"I want you to be wise in what is good, and innocent in what is evil" (Romans 16:19). There is prey, which is what happened in the garden with Eve, and there is pray, which is what Jesus did in the Garden. God had His reasons for forbidding Eve to eat of that particular tree, but she disobeyed and then Adam. Jesus was also in a Garden, and He also had an encounter with a tree: He was hung on it. "So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men" (Romans 5:18).

July 2

"In Jesus Christ, in that God-man, so full of tenderness, so gentle, kind, loving and long-suffering; here not spurning away but encouraging a weeping Magdalene; here shedding tears for a city that was about to shed his blood; here forgetting his own sorrows in pity for a mother's, putting forth his dying strength to save a thief, and spending life's latest breath in prayer for bloody murderers; in him who hastened on wings of love to pluck this world from ruin--who never wished ill to any, but good to all--who returned blessing for cursing...who this day bends looks of pity on [us]...in him God unveils himself to us" (Dr. Guthrie).

"Forgetting what lies behind..." (Philippians 3:13): slanders; temptations; sins which God has already forgiven; the little and large faults of others; provocations that sear our sensitive nature; quarrels that either we or they have started; and all the disagreeables of life. We have such a perverted and sinful tendency to zero in on the bone and forget the delicious meat of life: family, friends, co-workers with whom we can share a thought and a laugh. Let us blot out others' transgressions and our disagreeables today.

July 4

"Then the Lord answered Job out of the storm..." (Job 38:1). Then, when his friends had spoken their broken pieces, when Job was at wit's end and had vented his grief and despair at this God who was out to get him--then God spoke His Word to Job. God does not mistime any of His visits, whether for mercy or for judgment. Sometimes He has to come in a storm for us to notice the importance of the lesson He has for us. He does not come to crush or overwhelm us, but to make sense of our perplexing problem: "Come now," He implores, "let us reason together" (Isaiah 1:18). Dear friend, we are not alone in any storm of life!

July 5

In Revelation 3:20 Jesus is presented as the guest of our heart: "Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him, and eat with him, and he with Me." Our Jesus can't become any more human than fellowshipping with us at the table. In His I AM's, He tells us I AM the bread of life; I AM the Staff of Consolation on which you can lean; I AM the Bread which you can eat to gain strength; I AM the Good Shepherd who will lead you through your valley; I AM your right-now help in this time of trouble. I AM--not was or will be!

July 6

"[The wicked] says to himself,`God has forgotten; He covers His face and never sees'" (Psalm 10:11). The wicked think that because God lets them live then He must wink at their offenses. Justice may be blind on earth but heaven sees every move and God will recompense. It's yet another of His blessed wills. He is the Vindicator of causeless causes: of those who have been wronged for no reason. Innocents have been slaughtered for centuries in wars and slanders and circumstances that have turned against them. The Innocent One encountered Evil in its raw form, but He conquered, and He conquers for us.

July 7

"Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence..." (Psalm 51:10,11). What a perfect prayer! The guilt of what he had done to Bathsheba and her husband crushed David's heart and he realized only God could cleanse and release him. David craved a new heart for he knew his old one was beyond mere repair. He wanted a pure love and a new mental and moral nature that would renovate his entire self and life. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart He will not despise (vs.17). O Father, we come to You for new hearts and minds!

July 8

"I can't do that." Edgar A. Guest wrote a delightful poem about this problem: "Some said, it couldn't be done./But he, with a chuckle, replied/That maybe it couldn't, but he would be one/ Who wouldn't say so till he tried./So he buckled right in with a bit of a grin/On his face. If he worried, he hid it./He started to sing, as he tackled the thing/That couldn't be done--and he did it." The high school senior was dying. He asked to receive his diploma earlier than his classmates. When the principal brought it to him, the brave boy smiled and said, "Well, I made the grade!" Are we brave enough to make God's grade?

July 9

"The purpose of a book of meditations is to teach you how to think and not to do your thinking for you. Consequently if you pick up such a book and simply read it through you are wasting your time. As soon as any thought stimulates your mind or your heart you can put the book down because your meditation has begun" (Thomas Merton). What a pity our progressive world has no time to think, to slow down and feel the breeze. Instead, the gentle breeze becomes a wind as we whiz through it. Perhaps our modern meditation could be, "In quietness and trust is your strength" (Isaiah 30:15).

July 10

Greediness is a terrible affliction. Noiseless and secret giving of those tangibles and intangibles we so covet can be a cure for our wants that we translate into needs. We have heard the expression that today's luxuries become tomorrow's necessities. For those who live in the tropical zone, air conditioning has become an essential to health--and yet, how did our ancestors do without it? Sacrifice? Say that today, and it could mean giving up our television program for one night. We have not resisted to the point of shedding blood or tears in our striving against our inclinations (Hebrews 12:4). Priorities...!

July 11

"See...that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many" (Hebrews 12:15). Unfortunately, the root of hostility digs deeply into hearts everywhere human beings live, work and play. The Lord showed Moses a tree at Marah (Exodus 15:25) that he was to throw into the bitter waters so they would become sweet. Dear friends, let us not waste one more day without grasping the Branch of the Lord and allowing Him to sweeten our bitter waters. "In that day the Branch of the Lord will be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land will be the pride and glory of the survivors of Israel" (Isaiah 4:2). Thank You, Father!

July 12

Indigestion can be miserable; spiritual indigestion is even worse. Peevishness causes the heart to burn. One of the saddest aspects of slow-burning anger is that it finally turns on the one who inflicts it. Shakespeare said, "Men in rage strike those that wish them best." Soon those who once wished them well wish them gone and out of sight and mind, and then they wonder why they are no longer welcome in normal company. Those so bent on giving others a piece of their mind soon lose their own peace of mind. "Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice" (Ephesians 4:31).

July 13

E. Stanley Jones tells about the fire extinguisher fastened underneath a certain pulpit and says the precaution was not necessary, as there was little chance a fire would break out in that particular pulpit. The poor minister's life was non-contagious. One of the people at the meeting even prayed, "O God, grant that if any spark of divine grace has been kindled in this meeting, water that spark." This would be very funny if it weren't so sad that sometimes we, too, douse our own and another's little spark that flares up now and then. The Holy Spirit lights our candle but we have projects and attitudes that quench the Light that gives a sparkle to life.

July 14

"They will share [the burden] with you" (Exodus 18:22c). There are some distresses in life that must be shared. When the doctor tries gently to break the news to the grieving mother that her beautiful 20-year-old daughter has non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, another heart and shoulder must be there to help bear the awful burden; when the perplexed husband is told that his wife of 52 years has Alzheimer's, he needs another to bear the burden with him. We all need a significant other to carry us through the day of "grief and desperate sorrow" (Isaiah 17:11c, KJV). It is not good for the anguished to be alone.

July 15

What is a man? "...The spirit of wisdom and understanding...counsel and strength...knowledge and the fear of the Lord...He will not judge by what His eyes see, nor make a decision by what His ears hear; but with righteousness He will judge the poor, and decide with fairness for the afflicted of the earth ..." (Isaiah 11:2-4a NAS). This verse applies to Jesus, and it is the human Man who we want to imitate. Jesus never tyrannized nor insisted that His way be done. He did tell us that His Father's will must finally be done, if we are to be happy.

July 16

"He will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry out or raise His voice, nor make His voice heard in the street. A bruised reed He will not break, and a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish...He will not be disheartened...until He has established justice in the earth..." (Isaiah 42:2-4 NAS). A true man of God is tender and quiet and persevering. He does not crush the nearly wilted spirit of wife or son or daughter or friend or foe. He is there to uplift hearts, for it is useless to say it if he won't do it. A day will come when it is too little and much too late.

July 17

"Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for it...for no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church..." (Ephesians 5:25,29 KJV). When we love, we indeed cherish, prize, esteem, treasure the object of our love. We appreciate that person for what he or she is, not for what we think we can make of him or her. Certainly the sword of ridicule will not cure the person of whatever we think is the problem. We are unique and it is that very uniqueness we can cherish in our family member or our friend.

July 18

The theory of the Peter Principle is that we are promoted to incompetence. There is a story of the pocket-watch that went to London with its owner. It became dissatisfied as it looked at Big Ben, the immense tower clock of London. "I wish I could be up there," the watch mused. "I could serve the multitude." Suddenly the little watch had its wish and was drawn up to the tower and it became invisible. Its rise became its demise. "God has appointed...apostles...prophets ...teachers...workers of miracles...gifts of healing...those able to help others...those with gifts of administration..." (1 Corinthians 12:28). There is no shame in being in our place, wherever or whatever that is.

July 19

"If I had to live through a major illness again there is one part of the last...years that I would change. I chose to make my experience with cancer very private. I was afraid, and afraid to express that I was afraid. Also, I did not want to burden anyone else with my problem. I now consider my previous orientation to have been selfish and stupid. I would now want to be encompassed by a caring community of friends with whom I could share the inner mental and emotional trauma of illness. And I would hope to be in the care of health professionals for whom I was not a diagnosis but a person" (Dr. Donald Musser, Stetson University, DeLand, Florida).

July 20

"So Lot chose for himself all the valley of the Jordan...Thus they separated from each other" (Genesis 13:11 NAS). Abraham gave Lot first choice, and Lot took the choicest part. Lot didn't commit evil in the choice; rather, it was in the motive. He wanted worldly good, and didn't give thought to the final consequences of his choice. His uncle Abraham's first thought was how best to serve God; Lot's first thought was how best to serve Lot. Paul, too, had a problem with being forsaken for what Demas thought was greener pasture: "Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica..."(2 Timothy 4:10).

July 21

We want par or below for our golf game, but we want to be above par for the contest of life. Jesus tells us He came that we might have life abundantly (John 10:10). Some think they must experience it all, even the below-pars of life; they collect sensations as others collect stamps or smoked bottles, not realizing they join Eve in tasting the forbidden fruits. They want to taste the so-called whole of life and find it leaves a bitter taste in their mouths. "Come out...be separate...touch no unclean thing..." (2 Corinthians 6:17). We want to live an above-par and wholesome life for our Lord and others.

July 22

"`Why should he be put to death? What has [David] done?' Jonathan asked his father" (1 Samuel 20:32); "`Crucify Him!' `Why, what crime has He committed?'" (Matthew 27:22,23). Indeed, what evil has He done? He who knew no sin (2 Corinthians 5:21) was about to die for the sins of the rest of us. We wonder at times why someone has a burden that seems so unfair. The disciples asked Jesus: "Who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" "Neither," the Man of Sorrows replied. (John 9:2,3.) Pain and sorrow are facts of life; the question is, do we glorify or vilify Him in the fires of affliction?

July 23

"I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that He considered me faithful, appointing me to His service..." (1 Timothy 1:12). What an extraordinary idea this verse presents: our Lord encourages us because He considers us faithful. He puts us into His service so we might be ministers, teachers, comforters, helpers: whatever He has chosen for us to do. We need not force ourselves into His service, for He has chosen us for His appointment. We need not worry about results, either, as long as we remain steadfast to His principles. Yes, we thank Christ Jesus who has already strengthened us for whatever this day brings.

July 24

*Happiness is pleasure; joy is peace. *Happiness is a tangible result, dependent on circumstances; joy is the result of faith, independent of happenings in life. *Joy is internal, solid and light; pleasure is external, liquid and gray. *Joy is and will be; pleasure is a has-been. *Joy is character; pleasure is a condition. *Joy is expansive; pleasure is expensive. *Joy is reflection on the way to perfection; pleasure is deflection. *Joy is sense; pleasure is senses. *Joy has reserves; pleasure has reservations. *Joy is sharing; pleasure is shearing. *Joy is a variety of blessings; pleasure is a variable of emotions.

July 25

"Your strength will equal your days" (Deuteronomy 33:25). It is good to know our endurance will equal what needs to be done today. Somehow we gather enough energy to go on if we have such assurance from our source of Power. As a wise Unknown said, "The back is made to meet the burden." The soldier needs courage (and we are all soldiers in this earthly struggle); the mother needs an extra portion of patience and perseverance, the father a greater measure of physical stamina; both husband and wife can use the strength of forbearance; and we all need the strength to be calm in this worried world.

July 26

"Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise" (Proverbs 6:6); "We do not want you to become lazy..." (Hebrews 6:12). The tiny ant teaches us many lessons: it is self-motivated and highly industrialized; it collects its food in the proper seasons; it is fond of its young; it has foresight for others; and it works quietly without show until the work is done. It also works in cooperation and organization with others and it keeps its home meticulously clean. It knows its job and does it. "What you do in your house is worth as much as if you did it up in Heaven for our Lord God..." (Martin Luther).

July 27

"The greatest word is God. The deepest word is Soul. The longest word is Eternity. The swiftest word is Time. The nearest word is Now. The darkest word is Sin. The meanest word is Hypocrisy. The broadest word is Truth. The strongest word is Right. The tenderest word is Love. The sweetest word is Home. The dearest word is Mother" (Anonymous). The Bishop of Hippo said to Monica, Augustine's mother, "Depart, good woman, the child of so many prayers cannot be lost!" Mothers, don't forget the privileges we have in prayer and performance for our little ones.

July 28

God has given us such beauty and we walk by it every day. In her wonder-filled book about an unreachable child, One Child, Torey L. Haden tells of a difficult little girl who she graced with a flower and the child's reaction to the flower: "Tenderly she reached out and caressed one of the daffodils...Holding the flower gently and stroking its golden cup, she smiled...`My heart do be so big,' she whispered, `it be so big and I do reckon I be about the happiest kid for it.' When is the last time we held a flower in our palm and saw life's astonishments? "My heart do be so big...!"

July 29

"Only...among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honor" (Mark 6:4). O! the grief felt by those who want so much to share the hope and the joy of Christ Jesus with their families! Take heart from this sad commentary by Jesus Himself on the ignorance and hard-heartedness of those we would bring to Him. Familiarity bred contempt for the Man who wanted to do a mighty work there. But He could not, and neither can we, much as our heart is breaking to do so. How we long to take the grieving son into our arms and present God--but he seeks comfort in gods. Our comfort is in knowing Jesus loves our beloved even more than we do.

July 30

"After every storm the sun will smile; for every problem there is a solution, and the soul's indefeasible duty is to be of good cheer" (W.R. Alger). To be of good cheer is a duty! The treasured verse, Isaiah 61:3, tells us that God grants us "the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting, so [we] will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified." We no longer need to look at the dark side of prospects. We can gather up the good treasure of promises stored in our hearts and praise God that every dark cloud does have a silver lining.

July 31

"Nothing so important, nothing so useful, if you want to clear your soul, as to be a man who can put up with a great deal. Such a man, if he is wronged, is more distressed over the sin committed than over the wrong done him; he is always ready to say a prayer for his enemies, forgives an injury with all his heart, and is quick to ask forgiveness of others, and you will find him more easily moved to pity than to anger. And all the while, he is putting constraint upon himself, doing all he can to make his corrupt nature the servant of the spirit" (Thomas a Kempis).

Ray Charles - Know More About the Genius

Ray Charles was born in Albany, Georgia on September 23, 1930. His began to show an interest in music from the time he was three years old. This was mainly because of the efforts of a café owner who also played the piano. Ray Charles started losing his eyesight at a very early age, and by the time he was seven years old he was completely blind. This did not deter him from doing things for himself, and with the encouragement of his mother Ray Charles continued his pursuit of music.

At the young age of seven he went on to become a charity student at a school in St. Augustine. It was at this state-supported school for the deaf and blind that he got formally trained in music. He not only learned to read and write but also arranged music in Braille. This is where he also learned to play musical instruments such as the piano, sax, trumpet, organ and clarinet.

Ray Charles had an innate gift for music and was blessed with the nickname "The Genius" very early in his career. He not only lived up to this term, but became a trendsetter in many areas of music. He had had a massive influence on various genres of music such as country, jazz and rock, gospel, rhythm and blues and more. Ray Charles was very clever and perceptive as far as his business interests were concerned. He insisted on having control on his master recordings and went on to form his own companies and record labels.

He broke into the bastion of sacred and secular music, fusing it with jazz and blues, to come up with a fiery, fervid style that is popularly known as soul music. Soul music is where the very foundation of rock and roll music lies.

Ray Charles also contributed to the integration of country and pop music with his albums which were released in 1962. His Modern Sounds of Country and Western Music, Vol. 1 and 2 ensured that he got a wide exposure to new audiences who accepted both him and his music whole heartedly. He was an expert at mixing different musical styles and came up with many path breaking albums that were hits on the Country and Pop charts.

The official state song for Georgia was Ray Charles' recording called "Georgia on my mind". He was the winner of 17 Grammy Awards and also went on to receive the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987. Other awards he won include "The Kennedy Center Honors" and "The National Medal of Arts" which he received in 1986 and 1993 respectively. In 2004 he was ranked #10 by the Rolling Stone Magazine on their list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All time". He went on to be listed as #2 on their list of "100 Greatest Singers of All Time".

He died at the age of 73 due to acute liver disease on June 10, 2004, just before the release of his album "Genius Loves Company"

I study health issues for many hours a day. While I focus on endocrine health (thyroid, etc.), I have to cover the health waterfront because the body insists on living as an integrated whole.

Ron Foster proudly states that his chickens dine on the best of corn and soybeans. Well, besides the fact that's not what chickens were born to eat, producing less nutritional value than naturally fed chickens, that diet creates a world of problems.

Because what goes into the chicken also goes into the people who eat the chicken.

Almost all corn and soybeans come genetically modified these days. Most of Europe has outlawed GMO because of the damage it does to DNA. Singapore beats the tar out of you if you sell GMO food. The FDA, beholden to Agribusiness, is thinking about it.

But besides the GMO problem, soy is poison.

I know, I know, lots of people sing its praises. Just not anybody familiar with the science.

Here are a few particulars:
1. Soy floods our bodies with bogus estrogen, throwing our entire endocrine system for a loop. Get enough of it, and men grow breasts, get prostate cancer and so on. Girls go into premature puberty. Boys deal with lifelong low testosterone levels. And women? Yikes! Endometriosis, PMS, breast cancer, all sorts of unlovely things.

2. Soy causes kidney stones

3. Soy sucks the minerals out of our bodies-and most of us are already wildly deficient.

4. Soy depresses thyroid gland action, throwing people into hypothyroidism.

5. Soy is loaded with glutamate, a brain excitoxin, which damages the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that controls both the endocrine system and the nervous system. A damaged hypothalamus can lead to many endocrine issues, peripheral neuropathy and auto-immune diseases.

6. Etc, etc, etc.

And you want me to eat that chicken? Drink the soy milk you sell? Buy all the products on your shelves that contain soy?

I believe your intentions are honorable and your hearts are pure, but you need to take another look at soy. With that, Costco could make a huge difference in the nutrition of our country.

Well, that and getting rid of high fructose corn syrup.

But besides going tsk-tsk, I want to thank you the very positive steps you have taken. I've noticed and appreciate your efforts.

The Blind Side - Sandra Bullock Shines

An extraordinary movie about the depth of the human heart and The compassion we as humans can, at times, show one another. Mix in football and you have a movie that will please everyone. You will be drawn into its charm and you won't want it to end. The interesting part about the movie is it is based on a true story. Art imitating life.

The movie is based on the novel, The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game, by Michael Lewis and adapted to the screen by John Lee Hancock. John Lee Hancock (The Alamo) also took on the direction chores and created this heart warming tale without going over the top. His subtle weaving of the plot lines from the past to the present is handled with a deft touch.The ensemble cast all give excellent performances and Sandra Bullock shines in this role.

The story revolves around Big Mike who is black and a teenager with an absentee father and a drug addicted mother. Big Mike, Quinton Aaron, has had a hard life living with relatives and abusive foster parents. Big Mike is over six feet tall and has a massive body and looks intimidating yet, he is shy and introverted. He finds shelter where ever he can and resorts to living on the street at times.

Leigh Anne Tuohy, Sandra Bullock, (The Proposal) is a human dynamo of a personality and has married well. Her husband Sean,Tim McGraw,(Four Christmases, owns several chains of fast food restaurants and they live comfortably. Their son SJ, Jae Head, is a ball of energy and has inherited his father's business sense. Their daughter Lilly, Lily Collins, is a popular girl on the cheer leading squad.

SJ befriends Big Mike at school with no fear about his intimidating size. Leigh Anne begins noticing Big Mike when she picks up SJ from school and asks SJ about him. Not long there after, on a cold and rainy night, the family is returning late from an outing. Leigh Anne spies Big Mike walking along the side of the road and her empathy overwhelms her and she firmly asks Big Mike to stay the night at their house. The next day Leigh Anne asks Sean if Big Mike can stay for a while. Sean finally agrees and laughs, saying he knew what was going to happen when she got that look in her eye. You could tell he had seen it before and she was on a mission. Big Mike agrees to stay slightly in awe of Leigh Anne and the warm family setting.

Big Mike has been noticed by the football coach Burt Cotton, Ray McKinnon, who instantly sees what a benefit he would be to the team. Unfortunately, Big Mike's grades aren't good enough to be eligible so the Tuohy's hire a tutor Miss Sue,Kathy Bates, (Revolutionary Road) to help him. Big Mike finally makes the team as an offensive left tackle but, Coach Cotton finds out he is a gentle giant. He is playing miserably. Leigh Anne steps in and explains in a way Big Mike can understand what he is supposed to do. He then begins to play with incredible intensity and is unstoppable. Leigh Anne being a force of nature walks by and smiles at Coach Cotton and says he can thank her now.

SJ just loves Big Mike and they start bonding and Collins feels the gentle spirit of the big guy and begins to form a relationship with him. The Tuohy's ask Michael as he is now called if they can adopt him and he agrees. Leigh Anne begins her quest to get all the necessary paperwork and permissions. There is a memorable scene when the fearless Leigh Anne visits a seedy area of town and is confronted by a bunch of brothers.

Michael is now a star offensive left tackle and is drawing the attention of the major universities football programs. There are some great scenes with J acting as Michael's agent with the college coaches. You will die laughing at his Jerry Maguire style antics. Michael's grades are still borderline so Miss Sue continues to tutor him,as well as, push him towards accepting her alma mater and the Tuohy's. You can guess by now trouble is on the horizon with the adoption process and Leigh Anne and Michael have some issues. Michael realizes that Leigh Anne is really there for him and he confronts the trouble maker and wins.

The end of the movie is a true gem with SJ leading the team on the field. Michael becomes an All American Offensive Left Tackle and has a successful college career. The finale is memorable with Michael turning pro and going in the first round.

Sandra Bullock gives a powerful performance and got wins in the Best Actress category from the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild. Need I say more. Tim McGraw gives his best performance to date and deserves some credit for his work. Jae Head (SJ) is a surprise and gives a dynamic and humorous performance. Hopefully we will see him in the future. Kathy Bates gives another fine performance as Miss Sue, and is a treasure in any movie.

The Blind Side is one of those movies that enthralls you from the start to end. You can't help but involved with the characters and cheer at the triumphs. The Blind Side is a must see movie.

Eye Yoga

One of the best benefits of exercise is that it reduces stress. Our bodies react to stress the same today as our ancestors did thousands of years ago, by releasing chemicals that get us to move, to fight or run away. For people with poor vision, those options actually create additional stress.

These people don't like exercise, they get additional stress from not moving, and a vicious cycle begins. Their health suffers, they gain weight and their bodies deteriorate, but this cycle can be reversed.Unfortunately most people never train vision; they don't realize they can improve it.

We are born blind. We must learn to see; therefore vision is a skill, and all skills are trainable. The first step to improving vision is to begin working with the muscles that move our eyes. There are two types:

1. Extra-occular muscles move our eyes around in our head; we can move our eyes up, down, left, right, and in a circle without moving our head. These muscles can get tight or stiff just like any other muscle, so we can loosen them up with massage before consciously moving them around.

2. Internal eye muscles changes the shape of the eye to allow us to focus on objects at different distances. These muscles also get tight by maintaining a close focal length for long periods of time such as during reading or working on a computer.

Eye Muscle Exercises (if you wear glasses take them off):

1. Eye Massage: with your fingertips lightly press on the eyes, gently feeling for tightness around the orbital bones.

2. Eye Muscle Activation 1: move your eyes from a neutral position to an upward position, then back to neutral; do this 3-5 times. Repeat towards the left, right and down.

3. Eye Muscle Activation 2: hold your thumb out in front of you at arms length, without moving your head follow the tip of your thumb with your eyes as your thumb traces a large circle in the air.

4. Focal Accommodation: pick 2 objects, one near (within 6 inches) and one far (6-500 feet away) quickly shift your focus from near to far. As soon as the far object is in focus, focus back on the near, perform 10-20 jumps.

Practice these drills once a day for 2 weeks and notice the change in your overall stress level.

Caring For a Ferret Baby

Back to where it began:

It is important to know and get fully acquainted with a baby ferret and his birth circumstances. A pregnant ferret needs a lot more sleep and more food during its pregnancy that usually lasts to 42 days. She needs to be kept until she becomes restless to nest.

Before the baby ferrets are born, usually 2 weeks before birth, the pregnant female is moved to a secluded barn or room with fresh paper or pine shavings on his bed. She needs to pluck some fur to build her nest. Make sure that the ferret is kept warm, undisturbed, and always with plenty of fresh food and water.

When she gives birth, the mother and the ferret babies must never be touched only when very necessary. Once the baby ferret is born, the mother may eat the placenta as she produces milk. Always monitor the mother with plenty of high density calories food and fresh water for her to produce more milk.

Ferret mothers usually produce 7 or 8 ferret babies. The babies are blind, hairless, and pink-skinned, and are very small. Like all other babies, they need all the time to suckle and sleep to grow. Wait for 20 more days and you will see that the baby ferrets change colors as their eyes start to open. Wait for another 4 months, and the baby ferret will look just the same for the next 4 years.

Baby ferrets must be at least 8 weeks old to arrive in stores for sale. By this time, they must have had their first vaccination, neutered or spayed.

Feeding Ferret Babies

By 6 weeks, the ferret babies can now stop milking from the mother as they now require adult food. You do not need a high quality ferret food, just what adult ferrets eat are okay. This is the stage where their skeletal structures grow fast.

Soak their food in warm water for 5 minutes before feeding. Gradual switch is very important so it is advisable to talk to the breeder or caretaker of what brand is used. Never feed them with cat food. They need more fat than kittens and more protein but fewer carbohydrates. They have a short digestive tract and food transit from the stomach to the intestines is very fast especially for growing ferrets. This type of food may cost you more than cat food but ferrets eat in small amounts so make sure that you buy something with 35% protein, and 20% fat. They need real protein coming from animal sources and never from soy or corn meal. They will grow faster and healthier if you do this. Eggs and poultry are the best sources. Always provide clean water from bottles and not bowls. Never feed them with milk and ice cream, and anything with sugar as this will cause diarrhea.

Housing

Same with adults, growing ferret babies need a cage that is roomy, safe, and easy to clean. If the ferret can squeeze through any part of the cage, the ferret is in danger.

Keep this in check: cage must have a big wide door, but do not get a multilevel cage for growing ferrets. Make sure that the cage has a solid bottom. Let it have a break from the cage by letting it play outside 2 times a day at the most. Bedding has to be regularly cleaned. An old towel can do but make sure that their nails wood not get entangled. Hammocks and sleep sacks are good, but you can always sew an old shirt or rag.

This is the time you can toilet-train your growing ferrets. Start with a litter box and fill with clean and not clumping paper. Putting a small amount of waste into the litter box will help remind them where to litter.

Be Careful with Toys

A toy can just be anything for a young ferret though extra precautions have to be exercised. Do not use tiny parts that will cause them to choke or anything with rubber for them to chew. Remember that their teeth are very sharp and make sure that they are supervised when at play. Never leave the toys inside the cage while they are young because later on, they are chewed and they might choke which will require a surgical procedure. Never use foams or rubber toys if you do not want them to choke.

De-scented, Neuter or Spayed?

There are some cases where their anal glands will have to be removed. This is true for castration or spaying when they are 7 weeks old. Cuts from these procedures are small and barely significant. If they are, do a daily check and clean them with a little peroxide of a little bit of infection starts. Females have incisions on the center of their tummy and under her tail while males will have this near the testicle area.

This procedure at the early stages is considered controversial since abnormalities may develop. But without early neutering, females will have dangerous estrogen toxicity and males will be abandoned because of their ferocious smell.

Vaccinations and Exams

Check if their first distemper vaccines have been administered. Check on their medical records or try asking the breeder. The second shot is due in 3 weeks after the first, and a third one should be given 3 weeks thereafter. Annual vaccines will then follow. Distemper is a very dangerous illness for ferrets and cat vaccines must never be administered to ferrets. Check too if they have fleas, ear mites, parasites, diarrhea, or any other defect. Be warned once they litter in liquid green feces. Use antibiotics recommended by your vet and follow special care instructions as well.

Be warned too of virus in ferret babies. Make sure they all have good hygiene. Growing ferrets are the only animals able to contract colds, influenza and pneumonia, so warn your family never to touch them if they are afflicted by these. Symptoms include constant sneezing and a nasal discharge with rapid breathing and lethargy. Use oral antibiotics as recommended.

Other Concerns

Check too if there are other defects in your growing ferrets. Are they deaf, have undershot jaws, do they have cataracts, or any heart defect? Try doing a sound assessment from a ferret. Once they ignore these rattle distractions, it can be very problematic.

Socializing Ferrets

Teach them to socialize at their first month. They may not yet see very well, but this it the time they are most receptive of love, learning and affection. Maintain physical contact with the baby ferret 6 times a day, and not any lesser, for 5 to 10 minutes. If you do not do this, expect them to prolong their "nipping phase" which is bad. When it tries to nip, caress it gently, and clearly say NO. Never punish or physically harm them. Children at home must always be monitored when handling ferret babies.

Never ignore them because ferrets, from their growing stages to adulthood, need a lot of cuddling and touching. Most baby ferrets sleep frequently as they should so never worry if they have been sleeping all day.
